               "The Ignorance of Humanity"

Dear Citizens of the Planet Earth,

War. Starvation. Climate change. The problems of our planet are shoved down our throats every day. The media, the president, the peers we talk to, constantly reminding us of the tragedies that continuously unfold.  A bomb goes off, a child dies of hunger, a town hall is ripped apart by a storm, and we are the witnesses. We read the news, say how terrible it is, and go back to eating our dinners. In complete denial that any of these events will ever affect us, and only affect those that have already been killed. “It just happens”, “There are bad people out there, what can you do?”. That, my fellow citizens of planet Earth, is the very heart of the problem.

Every action we make, every vote we submit, every time we decide to not learn the politics of our nation and others, will affect a major part of the future. The person you vote for could be the exact same as Hitler, and you wouldn’t even know, because you refused to read about Hitler. The storm that rips apart your home didn’t have to happen, if only you knew the affect you have on the climate. The war that kills your son, could have been avoided, if only you knew about the actions your president has been taking. We have this information, we have access to all of the resources we need to know the truth. While this is widely ignored, a small group of people acknowledge this, prioritize new things, and start making solutions. New uses of technology have been invented, to create clean energy, and massively reduce pollution. New ways of farming and saving water have been found, to prevent an entire continent from suffering, and wars over these resources. All of these blessings, created by the people who took the information given to them and used it. Finally, a solution to all of our problems, right in our hands. The chance and hope for the survival of humanity has been revived!

You would think it would be that easy. That the world would bow down to these blessings, and use them to save the poor, the environment, and Earth itself. Why isn’t it so? What could possibly be the reason to deny the answers to all of our problems? The answer, is greed. The belief that paper, that has been given value only by man, is of more importance than the survival of people. These numbers, that poison the mind and society to such an extent, that people strive to have it in their lives, rather than to have a life. The higher the number, the less important it becomes to invest into new, clean energy, and humanity itself. Into feeding every person on this earth. As if the future of humanity shall take the economy as a valid excuse for their suffering. As if money shall matter, once the richest man in the world cannot find water, for there is none left. As if money shall matter, once your child is dead in your arms, due to a shot that should have never happened. As if money shall matter once the rivers of water, are now rivers of coal, and the clear air has turned black. Money will be stomped upon, once people realize what it has caused, and what it will cause.

Therefore, dear citizens of planet Earth, I ask you this.

Try counting your dollar bills while holding your breath.

Sincerely,

Sophia Marcinik

To the People/Person Who Came up with Common Core,

Why? Just why? School was already hard enough and you have to go and make things harder. We now get more work with harder questions. We have lives to live and you're just making it worse by giving us more, and more work. No wonder people stop doing their school work or drop out of school entirely, they want to live their lives. You're also just teaching us things in life that we'll never use. Why do we need to know that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell?

Teach us basic first aid instead. The only equation I ever remember in math is y=m-x+b, which is also the equation of how downhill my life is going because of "Common Core". None of the knowledge you're feeding us is "common", why are we being forced to learn subjects that we don't want to learn? Why do we need to take science if we're not going to become scientists? Why are we learning history if we will never become historians? Some classes are necessary, like math, but we should learn only simple and basic math, we will never have to answer an equation like 3x-2y+10z=350  to find out the speed limit or the price of an item.

Also... GYM CLASS, why are we taking WRITTEN tests in PHYSICAL education?! That makes zero sense, I think I'll never play school sports like lacrosse or skiing, so why waste time teaching them? At least teach us something useful, like how to get a job, or how to pay taxes, or teach us how to trade stocks. Why can't students pick the classes they wish to enroll in? Why can't they pick classes in which will help them pursue their fantasies and dreams? There are so many people I know that have said "I haven't done stuff like that in years." Or "Man, they're still teaching that? I never used that a single time in my life after high school."

We all know that we'll never use information like this again, so why waste the time teaching it when we can be learning something else more useful? Teach us how to buy a house, or the best and fastest way to pay off student loans. Help us get good jobs and pursue a happy life, not make us take these useless, and unnecessary classes.

Sincerely,

Veronica Padilla
